Rubato is a term used in music to indicate a subtle and expressive deviation from strict tempo. It is an Italian word that literally means "robbed time." Rubare - to steal.

When a performer uses rubato, they will
stretch and compress the rhythm of a piece in order to convey a more emotional or personal interpretation of the music.
Rubato is often used in romantic music, where it is used to create a more fluid and expressive performance.
